transitive / intransitive verbs
Whether the verb takes a direct object.
A transitive verb takes a direct object: They raised the flag. An intransitive verb does not: The sun rose. Some verbs do both, with a change of sense. Do not give an intransitive verb an object, and do not drop the object when the verb is transitive.
Examples
UseThey raised the flag. (raise takes a direct object)
UseThe sun rose. (rise does not take an object)
AvoidThey rose the flag. (rise is intransitive)
