straw man

An argument recast in a weaker form so it is easy to knock down.

A straw man replaces the real claim with a weaker one, then knocks that weaker one down. Answer the claim that was made.

Examples

UseShe said the fee was too high. (the claim) He said the fee covers the extra hours. (answers that claim; not a straw man)

AvoidShe said the fee was too high. (the claim) He said she wanted the service to be free. (replaces the claim; a straw man)
