rebut / refute
To answer versus to disprove.
To rebut is to answer a claim. To refute is to disprove it. Do not use refute when you mean only that someone replied.
Examples
UseShe rebutted the charge.
UseThe log refuted the charge.
AvoidShe refuted the charge. (If she only answered it.)
