rebut / refute
To answer versus to disprove.
To rebut is to answer a claim. To refute is to disprove it. Do not use refute when you mean only that someone replied.
Examples
Use She rebutted the charge.
Use The log refuted the charge.
Avoid She refuted the charge. (If she only answered it.)
