liable / likely
Legally responsible vs. probable.
Liable means legally responsible: The firm is liable for the damage. Likely means probable: It is likely to rain. A common error is to use liable to mean likely, as in The meeting is liable to run late. Use likely instead: The meeting is likely to run late.
Examples
UseThe landlord is liable for the broken stairs. (legally responsible)
UseThe old shelf is likely to collapse. (probably will)
AvoidThe old shelf is liable to collapse. (a shelf cannot be legally responsible)
Dictionaries now also list liable meaning “likely.” However, many people still consider this use an error, and they judge the speaker who uses liable this way.
