functional shift
A word used as a new part of speech.
A functional shift is a word put to work as a new part of speech: a noun used as a verb, or a verb used as a noun. Some shifts are standard. Email as a verb is one. Some remain casual. Ask as a noun is one. Use the shifted form when it is established, or when the new part of speech names something the older word does not. Recast when the older word already names the act.
