empathy / sympathy

Feeling with someone versus feeling for someone.

Empathy is the capacity to take another person’s feeling as if it were yours. Sympathy is fellow-feeling, or pity. You have sympathy for a stranger’s loss. You have empathy when you can inhabit that loss. Do not use empathy for every kind word.

Examples

Use sympathy for the family

Use empathy born of the same loss

Avoid empathy for every late train
