decimate
Heavy loss versus annihilation.
Decimate once meant to kill one in ten. The established sense is to inflict heavy losses. Do not use decimate for wipe out to the last piece. Destroy, wipe out, and annihilate do that work.
Examples
Use Disease decimated the herd.
Avoid The fire decimated the shed. (If nothing was left.)
