connote / denote
What a word suggests versus what it names.
Denote is the literal meaning. Connote is the associated meaning. Home denotes a dwelling. It connotes belonging. Do not use connote when you mean only “mean.”
Examples
UseSurgery denotes the operation.
UseSurgery connotes risk.
AvoidHome denotes warmth. (If you mean the suggestion, not the naming.)
