connote / denote
What a word suggests versus what it names.
Denote is the literal meaning. Connote is the associated meaning. Home denotes a dwelling. It connotes belonging. Do not use connote when you mean only “mean.”
Examples
Use Surgery denotes the operation.
Use Surgery connotes risk.
Avoid Home denotes warmth. (If you mean the suggestion, not the naming.)
