careen / career
To tilt or lean vs. to rush.
To career is to rush along out of control: The truck careered down the hill. To careen is to tilt or lean to one side: The boat careened in the swell. A common error is to use careen to mean rush, as in The car careened down the street. For speed, use career: The car careered down the street.
Examples
UseThe runaway cart careered down the lane. (sped out of control)
UseThe ship careened in the heavy swell. (leaned to one side)
AvoidThe runaway cart careened down the lane. (the cart sped; it did not lean)
Dictionaries now also list careen meaning “rush.” However, many people still consider this use an error, and they judge the speaker who uses careen this way.
