capitalization of titles and headings
Which words take a capital in a title or heading.
Capitalize the first word and the last word. Capitalize nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Lowercase articles, prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions unless they stand first or last—even when the preposition is long: Stories without Heroes, not Stories Without Heroes. Capitalize a short verb such as Is or Be. For hyphenated compounds, see capitalization in hyphenated compounds.
Examples
UseHow to Draft a Contract
UseStories without Heroes (Long preposition stays lowercase.)
UseWhat Is Worth Keeping (Short verb takes a capital.)
AvoidStories Without Heroes
AvoidHow To Draft A Contract
Some houses capitalize longer prepositions by letter count—for example, every preposition of five letters or more (Without, Through). Our recommendation is to lowercase every preposition, regardless of length.
