cannot / can not
The ordinary negative versus the two-word form.
Write cannot for the ordinary negative: I cannot tell. Use can not only when not belongs to the next idea: You can not only watch but vote. Do not write can not as the default.
Examples
Use I cannot open the file.
Use You can not only listen but speak.
Avoid I can not open the file.
