awake / awaken / wake / waken

Four verbs for coming or bringing out of sleep.

Wake is the default: wake up, woke, woken. Awake is common as an adjective: I am awake. As a verb it is a little more formal: She awoke at dawn. Awaken and waken mean the same thing and sound more formal still. Do not pile the forms in one piece. Pick wake unless you have a reason not to.

Examples

Use I woke at six.

Use The noise woke the baby.

Use I was awake before the alarm.

Avoid I was woken up and then awakened again in the same paragraph without cause
