artist / artiste
The ordinary word versus the theatrical import.
Use artist for a person who practices an art. Reserve artiste for a stage performer when you want that older theatrical coloring, or when you are quoting a billing. In ordinary use, artist is the word. Artiste now often reads as precious or ironic.
