amend / emend

Changing a text or law versus correcting a text.

To amend is to change by adding, cutting, or revising, especially a law, motion, or document: amend the statute. To emend is to correct a text, usually by removing an error: emend the manuscript. All emending is amending; not all amending is emending. In general use, amend is the word you want.
