almost / most

Almost as “nearly,” and most used in the role of almost.

Almost means very nearly but not quite: The tank is almost empty. A common error is to use most to mean almost, as in most all the time. Use almost instead of most: almost all the time. Most meaning “the majority of” is a different word and is correct: most voters.

Examples

UseAlmost everyone agreed. (nearly everyone)

AvoidMost everyone agreed. (if you mean nearly everyone)

Dictionaries now also list most meaning “almost.” However, many people still consider this use an error, and they judge the speaker who uses most this way.
