allude / elude

To refer indirectly versus to escape.

To allude is to point to something without naming it fully: allude to the earlier memo. To elude is to escape or slip past: the thief eluded the patrol; the name eluded her. You allude to a thing. You do not elude to it.

Examples

Use In his farewell email, the director alluded to tensions on the board.

Use The runaway heifer eluded three ranch hands for most of the afternoon.

Avoid In his farewell email, the director eluded to tensions on the board. (Eluded is the error: elude means to escape, and it never takes to. Write alluded.)
