acute / chronic

Two adjectives of time and severity, especially in medicine and borrowed uses.

Acute means sudden, sharp, or severe, and often short-lived: acute pain, an acute shortage. Chronic means lasting or recurring over a long period: chronic pain, chronic delays. Do not use chronic as a loose synonym for bad or habitual when persistent or constant is clearer. In medicine, keep the time distinction: an acute illness comes on fast; a chronic one endures.

Examples

UseShe manages chronic asthma.

AvoidHe has a chronic talent for missing deadlines. (Say persistent or habitual.)
