accept / except

A verb of receiving versus a word of exclusion.

Accept is a verb meaning to receive, agree to, or take as true. Except is usually a preposition or conjunction meaning “but” or “other than”; as a verb it means to leave out. The verbs are near opposites: to accept a condition is to agree to it; to except one is to exclude it.
