abrogate / arrogate
Two formal verbs of taking or canceling power.
To abrogate is to repeal, abolish, or set aside, usually a law, treaty, or duty. To arrogate is to claim or seize something without a right to it, often power or credit. If a rule is being canceled, the verb is abrogate. If a right is being grabbed, the verb is arrogate.
