abjure / adjure

Two formal verbs that look alike and mean different things.

To abjure is to renounce or reject, often under oath or with formality. To adjure is to charge or urge someone solemnly to do something. If you mean “give up,” the word is abjure. If you mean “beseech or command,” the word is adjure.
